News Release

Fort St. John, B.C. Feb 13th, 2008

The Walk to Whistler Program for the City of Fort St. John, Community Services Department has added a new look for 2008 and selected CoreCommunity software to help re-launch the program.

A new walking challenge specifically for the city will be added to the already existing program that has attracted people from around the world.

In a move to continually offer motivating and effective programming they are expanding their walking challenge program to offer a more technically advanced online version that will also be linked with the ActNowBC program. As part of the program all participants in Fort St John will have free access to the new challenge through BC government program with prizing for people who reach certain milestone communities first.

Whether people like walking or like to be more active in sports they can record all their activity from walking to housework to hockey using the new activity converter. “There is a personalized section to plan individual exercise so they can incorporate it into every day life” comments Stacey Miranda, Active Living Coordinator for the City. It will promote the need to be active the equivalent of 10,000 steps or 20 minutes of vigorous exercise a day to reduce the risk of obesity, heart disease and hypertension that is affecting many inactive people.

Designed to host seasonal walking and physical activity challenges for all ages, organizers plan to set up community challenges, with fun prizing for the winning teams and random prizes to recreation facilities throughout each seasonal event. Individuals can also join the program to work on their health and fitness on their own time and pace.

“CoreHealth software has a good reputation in North America and is very user friendly with great support. They really help make set up of the technical tools easy and encouraging” notes Stacey.

Fort St. John features excellent year-round sports facilities that provide venues to the very active sports community. From hockey, to soccer, to martial arts, there are sports to suit a wide variety of interests. There is also the opportunity to check out many sports on a provincial or national level as Fort St. John has played host to several large sporting events, such as the Northern BC Winter Games, Canadian Junior Speed Skating Championships, and the Provincials for hockey, volleyball, and curling to name a few.

“We are excited to see cities like Fort St John build stronger communities, making people aware of the obesity crisis and providing tools to help people change their lives.” comments Anne Marie Kirby, CEO of CoreHealth Technologies.
